The law is fully compliant with Regulation (EC) no. 110/2008), which is no longer in force. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will harmonize the regulations with the valid legislation, ie. Regulation (EU) 2019/787 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 on the definition, description, presentation and labeling of spirit drinks, the use of the names of spirit drinks in the presentation and labeling of other foodstuffs, the protection of geographical indications for spirit drinks, the use of ethyl alcohol and distillates of agricultural origin in alcoholic beverages, and repealing Regulation (EC) No 110/2008 and Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 716/2013 laying down rules for the application of Regulation (EC) No. 110/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 January 2008 on the definition, description, presentation, labeling and protection of geographical indications of spirit drinks, until 2021.
The following products have been registered so far:
• „Njeguški pršut“, as a geographical indication, registered on December 9, 2016;
• „Pljevaljski sir“, as a designation of origin, registered on October 3, 2017;
• „Crnogorska goveđa pršuta“ as a designation of origin, registered on July 16, 2018;
• „Crnogorska stelja“ as a mark of origin, registered on July 16, 2018;
• “Crnogorski pršut”, as a geographical indication, registered on December 28, 2018;
• „Durmitorski skorup“, as a designation of origin, published on the complaint procedures in the “Official Gazette of Montenegro”, no. 10/2019 from 13.2.2019. years.
In 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture authorized “Monteorganica” d.o.o. to perform the activities of assessing the conformity of agricultural or food products with the specification of these products, after their entry in the register of designations of origin, geographical indications, names of guaranteed traditional specialties and designations “Higher quality”. Montenegro still does not have a certified product on the market.
Due to the specifics of the policy and registration requirements (preparation of the Product Specification, assessment of product compliance with the Specification, additional laboratory analyzes), support is provided to manufacturers to prepare the necessary documentation for the registration of marks. Measures to support producers in placing protected products on the market (preparatory works, including design, laboratory analyzes and all other activities in the initial phase), informational and promotional activities are also defined, which indicate the specifics of products in terms of their quality. Support for promotion based primarily on consumer interest in quality, tasty food as well as traditional food.
Also, the Ministry of Agriculture conducts educational workshops and study trips for producers every year.
